NFNLP NLP TODAY Special Issue 10/20/2014 Changing A False Belief I have been giving this a lot of thought since I have been working with people on building their business and their beliefs about money and success are paramount. The first requirement to changing a belief is to acknowledge and accept your beliefs as false, or at least no longer true. Sounds simple, but is it? I was lucky in that my first exposure to a hypnosis practice was a super busy booming super practice, so my initial belief about hypnosis and NLP was it is possible to make money (a lot if you’re willing to work) in this field. So when I work with people who believe it is hard or impossible to do this, do to the economy, Bible belt, Conservative area, People do not like hypnosis, yada, yada, yada. The first is to get them to switch their beliefs about making money and what success means. We have to this with also shifting beliefs about things like weight loss and smoking. We all like to think we can easily change a belief until it comes to one of your own. I recently had two experiences that helped me reframe this and made me a better change agent in the process. Last year I decided to do more acting and had the chance to do some film, well it is an eye opening when a director tells you, “Dude you look fat, you may be muscular and strong, but on film you look fat. I looked at some pictures and yes I did. BOO HOO it was time to call the whaaaaaa bulance. So I did what I do true to my beliefs, I went back and starting working out harder, lifting more weight and watching my diet. I got bigger. WOW the evidence caused me to step back, what I was doing was not working, so I was doing it harder, with more effort and the result was nil. I had become the type of client I dread, one who knows better. I stepped back and asked for help from a trainer, who asked the question “Well Doc how do you want to look?” I had not thought about that, so I started to look around and decided. She then asked when I told her’ “How does he work out”. It was then my quest started. Lighter weights, more weights, more movement that embraces having to THINK about the movements, which we know activates the whole brain/mind/body connection. I found out 20 minutes of exercise that you have to think about is better than an hour of mindless exercise. I had to be honest and my workouts were mindless and my routine was set and had not changed since my old power lifting/body building days. It no longer worked. I also started to look around the gym and noticed all the “mature” guys who still work out like they did in their 20’s were no longer lean and muscular, but thick and fat looking. They may be super strong, so I asked another trainer about this and they explained (a former Mr. Universe) said most old guys (and girls) still want to work out like they did in there 20’s, and the guys still try to impress with a lot of weight. This also explains why people who never have worked out who start in the later years change their bodies, but those of us who have trained forever get stuck. “But I believe what I believe and this is how you work out, and I don’t want to look stupid doing these new classes, and what will the guys I used to lift with think” Again I became my client. I did more research, how does Hugh Jackman or Stallone work out? I stopped reading workout magazines since they are geared to people in their 20’s. I also stopped talking to older people who were happy with letting themselves go. I bit the bullet, and started the new routine. I also started Karate and this week I start a dance class. I was also lucky in that I was teaching a class so I worked on myself and did the change history, & creating and reinventing a new you process. I focused on the negatives of the old way of working out & how it makes me feel, and look. This year at the NGH I had shifted a lot and several people noticed and commented. I thought it was funny that a couple of people asked if I was working out. I have worked out my whole life and also did competitive martial arts, but no one noticed, but leaning out caused a shift. Also from reading evolutionary psychology certain looks and body shapes activate deeper parts of the brain. It has to do with our hunter/gather background. I keep using self hypnosis and NLP to reinforce the change and Saturday, my birthday, I was 15 pounds lighter and my body fat was between 10 and 12%. Waist was down 3 inches, and feel better. At the play I just directed a actor I have not seen in 2 years asked if I was working out again, cause I looked so much different. After I got into the process I was reminded this is the process I did to learn to sing a few years ago, and have done a lead in a musical and been asked to do more. OUR TECHNOLOGY WORKS< SO WHY DO WE FIGHT IT FOR OURSELVES? Back to our business example if your having issues building your business, step back and look at your beliefs. Also look at who trained you as most trainers do not realize they install their beliefs and attitudes while they are teaching so how was your trainers practice? You might need some new models. We spend a lot of time on that in the practice builder and in our coaching. What are your beliefs about the business side of our profession.
