NIA raids Burdwan blast accused’s home Khalid Mohammed, two others remanded in NIA custody Behrampore, 20 November: A team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) today raided the house belonging to the Burdwan blast accused, Rejaul Karim, at Bhootbagan area of Raghunathganj police station in Murshidabad district. The NIA team conducted a prolonged raid at Rejaul’s house located at Khodarampur Mouza of Raghunathganj. Some documents were seized from his house. Rejaul’s brother, Sentu Sheikh, who is a civic police volunteer was taken to the Raghunathganj police station and interrogated for several hours. Earlier, Rejaul’s father, Abdul Latib, was called to NIA office in Kolkata and questioned for several hours. It is yet to be ascertained if the NIA is going to arrest Sentu or his father, Abdul Latib, but repeated detention of the duo in NIA custody stemmed from indications that Rejaul, the 26 year-old suspected militant of Jamat-ul-Mujahideen operating in Purba Bengal had contacted his family members prior to his disappearance following the Khagragarh blast in Burdwan on 2 October this year. As per the NIA, Rejaul is a proclaimed offender wanted in connection with the Burdwan blast case. NIA had declared a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh to be given to those who would provide substantial lead enabling sleuths to arrest him. Significantly, an operative of Laskar-e-Taiyyaba, Abdul Karim Tunda, who was arrested from Indo-Nepal border years ago was learnt to have worked at Raghunathganj to establish an LeT network there. Meanwhile, Jamat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB) activists Khalid Mohammad, Sajid and Amjad Sheikh were today remanded in the custody of the National Investigation Agency till 28 November while five others including Rajia and Alima were sent to judicial custody till 5 December. All eight JMB activists were produced before the Bankshall Court today. Khalid, the Myanmar national who was arrested from Hyderabad for his involvement with different terror activities on 17 November, was brought to the city in transit remand and produced before the court today. NIAs counsel pleaded before the court to remand Khalid, Sajid, the chief of the Burdwan module, and Amjad, said to be the main person to procure material to make improvised explosive devices (IEDs), in NIA custody for eight days. He submitted that that it is important to interrogate Khalid as he had international links. At the same time Sajids interrogation is needed as he was the chief of the JMBs Burdwan module. The NIA officers will interrogate him to find out whether he had ever visited Burdwan and if he had connection with Sajid. Amjad used to supply materials for IEDs while Khalid was an expert in making the same. So the investigation officers would like to know whether they had any connection. A counsel who pleaded for Rajia, submitted before the court that she should be given bail as she and her baby are facing various difficulties in the correctional home. They are not getting proper food, the counsel submitted. The court remanded three of them in NIA custody and the other five in judicial custody. sns
