NICE GUYS COME SECOND The benefit of keeping accurate records - TopicsExpress

NICE GUYS COME SECOND The benefit of keeping accurate records over 2000 bike races ridden is that you can analyze the statistics at any time. A friend said to me recently “you talk a lot about your coming second in races, why?” It was mainly because, particularly as a small team pro I was beaten by some famous names, evidently better than me, no shame. A couple of times I was robbed, but that is sport. In fact I had 155 second-places, about 500 top tens and 24 championships, road, track, cyclo-cross, hill climb and mountain biking together. How did I win championships, with all of those runner-up places? Because I was consistent over a season and amassed the most points. How about wins? First, team wins, 100+ including 50 in two years in the Peugeot pro set-up in France. We got big bonuses! How about individual wins for the nice guy who came second? 167 to date, not that I intend to try and ride any more! One high spot, European Masters, individual and team in 1988. Low spot-twice missing the World Masters title in Austria. Conclusion: I had fun!
