George --------------------- Hi Steve, Thank you for letting me share with you how the Livingston Lamplighters have grown by about 20% in one year! If youve had your ear to the ground concerning chapter growth, you may have heard whispers of a program called Supercharging your Chapter with Turbo Growth presented by Paul Ellinger. If not, I can highly recommend it. Essentially, it is a simple program that requires an all-in from the chapter. In a nutshell, what you need to be as a chapter is three things: Your music needs to be recognizable, you as a chapter need to be approachable and you need to embrace an altruistic purpose. What does that look like? Songs being recognizable: Sounds simple, right? Well it is. Its singing songs that people of the age group you want to attract can mouth the words. (How many 40 somethings outside of barbershop know My Wild Irish Rose?). Your chapter being approachable: Does that mean your guys arent good guys? Absolutely not!! The music we create as barbershoppers is a unique sound. The average guy thinks, Gee, I cant sing like that!!. If your chapter is like most, before barbershop, the majority hadnt sung publicly and fewer probably read music. The crowd NEEDS to know that!! It shows that, in fact, we all are average guys. An altruistic purpose?: Huh?? Thats what I said when I heard the term. An altruistic purpose is a central focus in the community that everyone (in the chapter and out) can rally around. It gives your chapter an opportunity to be involved in the community. With an altruistic purpose, it provides another reason to get involved with your chapter(This group supports this cause in my community?!?! Id love to be involved with them!!).
