NIGER APC CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF NIGER REC — Jul 22, 2014 The All Progressive Congress, (APC) Niger State Chapter, has tackled the Independent Natioanl Electoral Commission (INEC) and threatened to boycott Niger East Senatorial District Election if the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, is not deployed from the state. The party has alleged, in a statement yesterday by the party Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Vasta, that the REC had been compromised but in a swift reaction the REC debunked the claim, saying it was untrue. The party has alleged that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) under the REC has received money for training from government which did not take place or involve the opposition, an indication that the REC cannot be trusted. “One example of such practices by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state was the recent approval of N44,375,850 which the governor graciously granted INEC in the state in the name of organizing what it called “National Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Voter-Education and Publicity (NICVEP).” “APC, therefore, calls on the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega to immediately redeploy him from the state before the forthcoming Niger East Senatorial elections as the only way to guarantee free and fair elections in the state”, the statement declared. The statement said, “APC will be forced to boycott all elections in the state if INEC headquarters refuse to act and redeploy the REC in the state before the next election in the state”. In a swift response, the REC stated that he neither collected money from the INEC Headquarters, Abuja, nor the state government for NICVEP”, saying that it was untrue. He explained that the committee as constituted was based on a letter from the headquarters in Abuja and has nothing to do with the state, maintaining that he has not compromised as alleged. The Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Idirs Ndako Kpaki in clarifying the area of disagreement between APC and INEC said that the state approved the sum of N28.7 million for “National Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Voter-Education and Publicity (NICVEP)” and not for INEC.
