NIGERIA 54TH ANNIVERSARY... Today marks 54 Years of our Independence as a Nation. We have come a long way as a Country, United and Working together. In our history, National progress has been the front burner for us. Our singular mandate as a Nation is to remain focused, while the main purpose of advancing our democracy process is on course. I am highly delighted to witness yet another anniversary of our Nation’s existence. Regardless of the monumental challenges we have faced as a nation, we have been standing tall and strong. Luckily for us, the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan as our democratically elected President has overturn several events in the scheme of things. His leadership style and role have given us reasons to celebrate. Under the Transformation Agenda of Mr President, Nigeria just this year became the largest Economy in Africa. This is a tremendous achievement that past administrations could not accomplish. Truly, President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda has given us a Face-Lift as a truly democratic society. For the First Time in Nigeria, all sectors of our Economic is working well and producing results. Take for instance, the Oil and Gas sector, where over 30,000 Jobs have been created under the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone deal. President Jonathan has implemented the Nigeria Gas Master Plan which elevated Nigeria in the international gas market. Nigerian now own crude oil Transportation Tankers that fly Nigerian flags. The implementation of the Amnesty programme in the Niger Delta has helped to increase Oil production. Just recently, the FG initiated mobilisation effort for a New FREE Trade Zone in Ogidigben in Delta State. There has been stable and efficient supply of petroleum products since President Goodluck Jonathan came into power. We now have 2000 cars in Benin being test run on the compressed natural gas (CNG) to power cars. GEJ has also completed the 31km gas pipeline from Itoki to Olorunsogo power plant. GEJ has completed the 136km gas pipeline from Oben to Geregu power plant. Domestic gas supply which was grossly inadequate has now improved by over 75%. On Education, which forms critical part of Mr President’s Transformation Agenda, between 2007 – 2013, the FG has moved education budget from N224billion to N643billion, thereby creating means for proper education funding. The national Open University is expanding its capacities to increase enrolment to 250,000 annually. As a result of these interventions the education sector is improving tremendously. The number of children out of has reduced drastically due to Mr President’s education reforms. Meanwhile, President Jonathan has constructed micro Teaching laboratories in 58 colleges of education. It is imperative to note that, President Jonathan has become the first Nigerian President to develop an Almajiri education scheme to take care of the children in the North with a view to curbing begging in the street. Finally, before GEJ we had 27 Federal Universities, but now, were up to 36. On Sports, President Jonathan’s administration has performed absolutely well, Nigeria hadnt won any title in sports for 19years till the Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations. On road and rail transportation, GEJ is ahead of past administrations. For example, the Lagos, Pothacourt and Ajaokuta rails were non-functional for 15years before President Jonathan fixed them. On Agriculture, 6million Nigerian farmers on the e-wallet platform now receive subsidised farm inputs without middlemen. 107million metric tonnes increase in farm outputs with introduction of dry season farming through irrigation. Our ICT sector is gearing up for an ever-green experience with the proposed delivery of smart cities recently. This is with a view to also creating jobs for the youths, also not forgetting the FG’s YouWin programme with have empowered over 20,000 young Nigerian entrepreneurs for the past three years. Indeed, there is need for us to celebrate because, President Jonathan represent a country that works. Just recently, due to the swift and professional response the President Jonathan administration gave to Ebola virus in our country, ended the spread of the virus in less than a month, today, Nigeria is Ebola free, first in Africa. We cannot hide, but openly appreciate God for giving us a leader as President Jonathan with his visionary mission for the country. Finally, Nigeria is winning the war against terror, this can be judged by the recent killing of the Boko Haram kingpin, Abubakar Shekau II. As President Jonathan once said, “Nigeria will not disintegrate” that has been his passion for the country for the past three years. This is also not forgetting the sanity that Mr President has brought to our elections under his election reform programme. As an aspiring Governor in Delta State, 1. Dr. Andrew Foubiri Warri seeks to start work from where Dr Emmaneul Uduaghan stops, having witnessed the overwhelming accomplishment of Dr Uduaghan these years. Happy Independence, Nigeria!!! Dr. A.
