NIGERIAN WOMEN FOR JONATHAN 2015 Press Release (20th March, 2014) Akpotimi Dorgu Commends President Jonathan Over Zainab Bulkachuwa’s Choice As Head of Appeal Court The National Coordinator, NIGERIAN WOMEN FOR JONATHAN 2015, Akpotimi Patricia Dorgu has commended the President and Commander in Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, over his request for confirmation of Zainab Bulkachuwa by the Senate as President of the Federal Court of Appeal, Abuja. This is coming as the appellate court has since August 18, 2011 operated without a substantive president, following the suspension of Justice Ayo Isa Salami by the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) as a result of the crises of confidence between him and then Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu. If confirmed by the Senate, Bulkachuwa’s appointment will set the record to make her the first female to head the nation’s second highest court, she asserted. Akpotimi Dorgu expressed satisfaction that the present administration is providing the platform for women to be actively involved in the nation-building process, noting that it is coming at a time the Nigerian judiciary is also headed by a female, Miriam Aloma Mukhtar. According to her, Bulkachuwa’s nomination clearly under-scores Mr. President’s undying faith in his drive for the realization of 35% affirmative action in both elective and appointive positions in boosting women’s participation in governance in Nigeria. Similarly, the National Coordinator, of the pro-Jonathan Women’s Organisation, NIGERIAN WOMEN FOR JONATHAN 2015, Akpotimi Dorgu, in Abuja, has also described the President’s out-right cancellation of the recent ill-fated Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment exercise as a crucial decision in the right direction, asserting that the inclusion of ‘one female’ in every three automatic slots for direct employment of members of affected families by the Immigration Service, is yet a huge plus, in recognizing and giving the women folk a place of pride in the scheme of things towards nation building. She added that no country in the world today can boast of achieving any meaningful development without the active participation of women. NW4GEJ/2015/Media Report
