NIS AND THE SUICIDE JOB SEEKERS! I watched and read with great sadness and consternation the ill-fated recruitment exercise conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service, whereby some job seekers allegedly died! Reports say that 8 job seekers lost their lives while many others sustained injuries in the course of getting access to the aptitude-test venue! First, the NIS allegedly collected N1,000 from each applicant as precondition for being considered. This is fraudulent and the Federal Government should direct the management of the NIS to refund the applicants immediately! It is grossly improper for the NIS to rip job-seekers off by asking them to part with any money! NIS has therefore engaged in extortion which is alien to global best practice in recruitment! Also, the affected job seekers had shown unreasonable and morbid desperation as if on suicide mission! It is very unfortunate that most so-called graduates have bastardized their intellectual and personal values! Any person, who has spent four or more years in a university or polytechnic and truly graduated, should be able to think better than committing suicide in search of jobs! If their academic curricular contents have prepared them for entrepreneurial development, and they have not only passed through the college, they will not be too desperate like this! Sad enough, most graduates have only crammed up their courses just to pass exams, they have not acquired skills and knowledge they can apply as resourceful individuals! Such categories will continue to scale fences and engage in sheepish stampede in search of jobs! It does not mean that graduates should not seek paid jobs, but that is only when he or she has written themselves off as incapable of thinking out of the box! Getting paid jobs, either in private or public enterprises is not as lucrative as creating employment with the knowledge and skills possessed! If a graduate truly possesses values which he or she intends to contribute to any job they seek, such values can as well be harnessed to become an entrepreneur! It is a pity that the level of unemployment in Nigeria has reached dangerous dimension that makes some graduates embark on frustrating and suicidal search as demonstrated at the unfortunate NIS recruitment exercise! Now, some job-seekers have died, many injured, and yet the jobs are elusive. It is a sad commentary that the country is under the throes of irresponsible governance institutions and the job seekers are being used as guinea pigs! Lastly, job seekers should not endanger their lives for whatever reason. All they need to do is to appreciate their own personal worth and knowledge just like competent artisans will simply apply their acquired skills, by setting up service centres! It is a pity. May the frustrated souls of the dead job seekers rest in peace and may God console their relatives! May God grant our leaders and public office holders better sense of responsibility, which is relatively scarce!
