NO, We do not think this is the problem. And here is why: We see a problem with both of these scenarios. We were never disciplinarians with our children and certainly didnt beat them down or make them feel bad about themselves (the left picture - terrible!). My wife spent countless hours helping our kids with their homework (she gave so much of herself); we were heavily involved with their extra-curricular activities (coaching, etc.); we tried to encourage them (not discourage them), and we always did things as a family. They earned good grades, our children respected us, and were well behaved. As to Today, we knew what was going on with our children, so we did not have irrational discourses with their teachers. Yet, if there was ever any hint of a problem, we would get to the bottom of it with their teacher. As to 1969, that is not how our parents treated us. As such, we cannot relate to either of these depictions. The bottom-line is that we need to show love and respect to our children in what we say and do. Hopefully, they will in turn continue that tradition...
