NOAA divers have returned from a month long mission to remove marine debris from Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, a World Heritage Site and one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. They removed approximately 57 TONS of fishing nets and plastic. Divers encountered and released 3 sea turtles, and spent several days removing a “super net” that weighed 11½ tons!! The NW Hawaiian Islands an important cultural site for Native Hawaiians, and give shelter to more than 7,000 marine species. There is currently no estimate on how much plastic washes ashore, but the pristine shorelines are now littered with marine debris and plastic which threatens life in these beautiful and remote areas.
