NOAH, now playing at the Lido Cinema - Hamilton. I could have been less interested in this film had it not been for its director Darren Aronofski, who along with Wes Anderson, PT Anderson and the Coen Brothers is at the cutting edge of new American cinema. As for the subject matter, I consider the Christian Bible a load of half baked bollocks that has inspired more than its fair share of lunacy and misguided interpretation. Noah of course is an allegorical tale, not a literal one and by most part this is the course Aronofski has set, along the way upsetting the faithful who truly believe that this bloke actually did built a boat and filled it with two of every kind of creature in order to save them while the creator cleansed the earth of humanity and all its wicked ways, (a terribly convoluted method considering the power and creative imagination of this particular god). Nevertheless, Aronofski has created a rollicking good yarn, part art cinema, part blockbuster action picture and part metaphysical treatise....not forgetting the big nod to scientific cosmology. Daring for sure and while not altogether successful it is the best biblical epic yet created by Hollywood for one reason and one reason only..... it does not treat the subject matter as historical fact, it treats it as allegory, allegory with a prescient environmental message that takes to task the much lauded culture of greed, currently so prevalent in Western political culture. Listening to Cain (Ray Winstone) ranting about nature being for man to do with as he pleased I was reminded of recent statements by Australian PM Tony Abbott and I quote: Nature is made for man, not man for nature. As for our own dear Russell as the man himself, a job well done. His Noah is emotionally conflicted, at times veering towards psychopathy. A special nod to Emma Watson who as Lia, is more than up to the task. I did not think I would like this one but I did.
