NORFOLK ISLAND: Its about time that the small remote Island, Norfolk Island, in the South Pacific, agreed to come under direct rule of the Commonwealth Government,The Island which was once described as the most corrupt Island in the Southern Hemisphere, has had its chances to self govern since 1979 and failed miserably. .I lived there for 7 years and there were 1000 tourists a week and that number dwindles down to 250, but has improved somewhat. Paying for two state of the art fire engines valued at 1.1 million is beyond me, when the Island were offered three near new tenders from Sydney Airport, which they declined. If the Island want the same benefits as other mainland states and territories, then they must be prepared to pay their way in relation to taxes ect. They dont complain since the women now travel to Sydney of Brisbane to have their babies, and yes, collect the baby bonus. Fair go. Maybe there is more that meets the eye? It is a well know fact that on return from visits to Canberra, before anything is mentioned to the Members of the Assembly, matters are brought before the Islands so called Elders for discussion. Another reason for the Island to come clean. Why should all other Australians continue to have their taxes spent and wasted on that Island. To the residends, stand up and take it on the chin before thin gs get worse.
