NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRE UPDATE: MAN!!! This was a ton of work. Just a bunch to get through. Thank you for the patience here. I had not really updated the situation in total since last Thursday. So much has happened down there.....here we go. BEAVER FIRE: Siskiyou County, near Horse Creek. Lightning caused. The fire is burning on National Forest land in timber. A national IMT II has command. 10,516 acres with unknown percent containment. Structures are threatened and protection of them has been the priority here. Very active fire behavior seen yesterday with running, torching, and spotting. Rough terrain is hampering efforts to line the fire. Very indirect attack being used here as they just cannot get crews close enough to engage the fire. A full resource mix of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, and helicopters fighting the fire. Air tankers on standby. Total personnel - 331. JULY COMPLEX...INCLUDES THE WHITE FIRE: Siskiyou and Trinity Counties, nearest Sawyers Bar. Lightning caused. A national type I IMT has command. 5523 acres, zero percent contained. Fires are burning in timber. The complex is in very rough terrain. Very active behavior with running, torching, and long range spotting. Access is going to be a major problem here so a lot of indirect attack of the fire will be utilized. Gaining control of fires in this area is never easy and this will be no different. A full resource mix of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, and helicopters are fighting the fires. Air tankers are available. Total personnel - 313. LOG FIRE: Siskiyou County near Greenview. Lightning caused. Unified type I IMT between Forest Service and Cal Fire has command. Fire is burning in timber. The fire is in very rough terrain. Very active behavior with running, torching, and long range spotting. Access is going to be a major problem here so a lot of indirect attack of the fire will be utilized. Gaining control of fires in this area is never easy and this will be no different. A full resource mix of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, and helicopters are fighting the fires. Air tankers are available. Total personnel - 236. EILER FIRE: Shasta County near Burney. Lightning caused. Unified command between a type II IMT from Forest Service and a type I IMT from Cal Fire. 25,900 acres, zero percent contained. The fire is burning in timber and grass. Structures are at risk including the entire communities of Burney, Fall River, and Hat Creek. The state of California has declared an emergency and brought in strike forces to protect structures, and infrastructre at risk. Sturctures including homes and businesses have already been lost. Highway 89 is closed from Highway 299 to Highway 44 due to the fire. Extreme plume dominated behavior has been seen with long surface runs and total stand burns. Long range spotting occurring. Crews so far have been putting a premium on defending structures and infrastructure rather than attempting to line this fire. Fire has been moving so rapidly that trying to under take an attack on any section has been pointless. Thunderstorms are forecast today with possible heavy rains. That would be the first break on the fire since it started last week. A full resource mic of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, helicopters, and air tankers are fighting the fire. Total personnel - 310. BALD FIRE: Shasta County near Burney. Lightning caused. Unified command between a type II IMT from Forest Service and a type I IMT from Cal Fire. 39,850 acres, zero percent contained. The fire is burning in timber and grass. This fire has the potential to merge with the nearby Eiler Fire. Structures are at risk including the entire communities of Burney, Fall River, and Hat Creek. The state of California has declared an emergency and brought in strike forces to protect structures, and infrastructre at risk. Structures including homes and businesses have already been lost. Extreme plume dominated behavior has been seen with long surface runs and total stand burns. Long range spotting occurring. Total personnel - 882. COFFEE FIRE: Trinity County near Weaverville. Lightning caused. A type I IMT has command of the fire. 4497 acres, 5 percent contained. The fire is burning in timber. Structures are threatened. Active fire behavior with torching and spotting seen. There are some access issues to parts of the fire so improving that is the main goal. Indirect lines are being put in, but it is hoped they will be more for access. Better conditions are expected today with a chance for rain on the fire from thunderstorms and showers. A full mix of resources are fighting the fire including hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, and helicopters. Air tankers available. Total personnel - 287 LITTLE DEER FIRE: Siskiyou County near Tennant. Lightning caused. Fire is burning on the Klamath National Forest. The local unit has command. 4700 acres, 43 percent contained. Extreme plume dominated fire behavior with crowning and long range spotting. Structures and infrastructure at risk. The fire has closed Highway 97 a major north south commercial route 12 miles north of Weed, and 2 miles south of Mt. Hebron. Highway 97 is closed southbound at the Oregon border. This fire has been very, very prolific in producing spot fires. It has jumped Highway 97 and the railroad line through it. Crews have been working hard to secure Highway 97 enough to get it reopened, and also protecting structures. The forecast today has the chance for heavy rains from thunderstorms. A full resource mix of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, and helicopters are working the fire. Air tankers are standing by. Total personnel - 412 DAY FIRE: Modoc County near Day. Lightning caused. Cal Fire has command of the fire. 12,975 acres, 55 percent contained. The fire is burning in timber and brush. Moderate fire behavior yesterday with torching and short range spotting. Structures are threatened. 5 residences & 1 outbuilding have been lost so far. Firefighters continue to make great progress. Fire behavior has moderated, however, a red flag warning will be in effect today due to thunderstorms in the area. Temperatures will be 10 degrees cooler than yesterday with much higher humidity. Winds will also be quite variable especially at the upper slopes and ridges. A full mix of resources are battling this fire. That includes hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, helicopters, and air tankers. Total personnel - 1786 LODGE COMPLEX: Mendocino County near Laytonville. Lightning caused. Cal Fire IMT I has command. 2900 acres, 15 percent contained. Fire is burning in timber. Moderate fire behavior yesterday with torching. The fire is burning in heavy timber in the Elkhorn Ridge Wilderness and Eel River Canyon areas. The steep rugged terrain makes access difficult. Due to severe drought conditions and accessibility challenges, the fire continues to grow. Firefighters are in the process of removing dead, dry vegetation from around residences in the Horseshoe Bend area and will continue to pursue aggressive air and ground strategies. A community meeting will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at the Harwood Memorial Park hall. The hall is located at 44400 Willis Ave. in Laytonville. A full resource mix of hand crews, engines, water tenders, bulldozers, helicopters, and air tankers are fighting the fire. Total personnel - 908 There are numerous small fires burning all over Modoc and Siskiyou Counties. New fire starts are still emerging. Both Cal Fire and the Forest Service are rushing resources to deal with the established fires, and to bolster initial attack on new fire starts.
