NOT THAT KIND OF VIRGIN FLIGHT: Grannies first 27 MAY 2014: Remember your first time? The excitement. The trepidation. The vomit bag? An and Ria are not only doing it for their first time, they are doing it on camera. One is terrified. One can’t do it fast enough; if you can say that about a woman aged 78. The result is a most charming video that leads up to the moment when these two geriatrics do it for the first time. An and Ria participated in a promotion with a telecommunications company called Vodaphone; a British company that wanted to record ‘A celebration of people doing incredible things for the first time.’ The Dutch grannies both flew on an airplane for the first time ever. An is 72 and had never flown before this opportunity. Before her flight she disclosed “You will never get me on one of those things for any amount of money. I’ll just take the bus.” Her husband revealed that he had never succeeded in getting An to travel by plane, saying that he would have liked to travel the world a bit; but An wasn’t up for it so he had to respect that. An is a cautious woman. If she rode a scooter she would wear a helmet and goalie pads. Her scooter would have a back-up sensor. Ria is 78 and didn’t think she would ever fly. She wanted to, but was married to a man with a fear of heights and apparently water, because he didn’t fly and wouldn’t swim. She describes her late husband as fearful, “So we never went on holiday far away.” Ria is a playful woman. If she rode a scooter it would be turbo-boosted and have a banana seat. She would put baseball cards on the wheels. The ladies shared their thoughts in anticipation of their journey. An reflected, “If you have a train accident; at least you’re on the ground. Same goes for a car. With an airplane, you’re just hanging in the air. Very scary.” Ria’s anticipation was recorded in her kitchen with her head tucked in a ‘Princess’ hairdryer with the hard hat bonnet; circa 1968. “I didn’t think I would ever fly. I always hoped it would happen.” They met at the airport before their flight and when they walked across the tarmac to their private jet, they commented, “Look how we’re received. We’re just like two princesses.” The princesses are a certified delight in the air; from An’s clucking about her ears, to Ria’s pure joy, “hahahaha, I’m in hysterics.” Watching these two firsties is reminiscent of watching a toddler or child fly in an airplane for the first time. It is magical. “This is just unbelievable” murmurs Ria. And then “My stomach hurts from laughing.” Like children they are full of wonder.
