NOTE FROM PETER BAILLIE- AAPG ASIA PACIFIC PRESIDENT Dear Student - TopicsExpress

NOTE FROM PETER BAILLIE- AAPG ASIA PACIFIC PRESIDENT Dear Student Chapter Members, AAPG is an international professional association of petroleum geoscientists that cares very much for our science. It is this appreciation of geological knowledge that distinguishes AAPG in the petroleum business, and helps us to promote the use of new concepts and ideas in our search for hydrocarbon resources. As students you are learning the fundamentals of our science: petroleum geology and its associated disciplines. In your studies, you are assembling your tool-kit to work as professionals within the petroleum industry. Your time at University is but a few short years -- before you realise it, you will be graduating and commencing work. The pace of development of our science is incredible, and there is a need for continued learning to stay up to date with current theories, concepts and ideas, let alone technologies. In supporting our student chapters around the world, we hope that you will develop a life-long association with the AAPG that will help you throughout your professional life. In due course, we hope that you will progress your Student Membership to become an Associate Member (as a Young Professional, you still obtain the same membership dues rate as students for the first two years) and then become a Member of the Association. As you progress your careers, you may then contribute to the body of knowledge that constitutes our science and you will in turn help the next generation of young members develop their careers. Membership brings access to our publications, the most notable of which is the Bulletin - a leading peer-reviewed publication for information on geoscience and the associated technology of the energy industry. The Bookstore frequently publishes new and exciting volumes on new various topics. We also run some of the best conferences in the business; these are venues to present your own work, learn from the work of others and general networking. Each year the Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE) and the International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) provide large forums for knowledge sharing, and there is an exciting range of field excursions, short courses and geosciences technology workshops within which members may participate. We also run in the Asia Pacific, a range of smaller regional conferences and our splendid series of Geosciences Technology Workshops (GTW). We value your participation in the Association -- now as you learn and in the future throughout your professional life. As you know, we have our own Asia Pacific region website and we hope you can send us articles about your activities. aapgasiapacific.org/ . We also publish our own Newsletter, and in case you have not received it, here are the last three editions. I write also to our Student Chapters who have not been active, and urge you to revive it to benefit from the resources available. You can visit the Student Chapter web-page : students.aapg.org/index.cfm for more information. Attached is a document on New Chapter requirements for your information. If you have any enquiries, please write to Mrs Adrienne Pereira, our Programs Manager in Singapore; [email protected] . She will be pleased to help your chapter get re-activated.
