NOTES FROM APRIL: Oh, the joys of raising butterfly cats - TopicsExpress

NOTES FROM APRIL: Oh, the joys of raising butterfly cats (caterpillars) ! Last year it was blacks this time of year and this year it is spicebush. I currently have 12 baby spicebush cats (was 11 but I found one 3rd instar this morning in the nursery) that recently hatched from eggs I found in the butterfly house. Does anyone have extra plants they have put in their fridge they no longer need or do they have a spicebush that has not yet shed its leaves? I noticed that if the bush is in the shade the leaves change and fall off faster than if it is in full sun (but it might have to do with how much moisture it gets as well since it would dry out more in full sun). The large bush in the park is completely bare but I did find a few leaves on the plants in the nursery but the one 3rd instar was the only sign of life I found on any of those plants left. Thanks! April Medina
