NOTICE: this is a rant about an announcers erroneous comments about marching bands...I am a big fan of marching bands and have tagged many dear friends with who I marched with or are in the industry. Read at your own risk! When I was in the 5th grade, I began playing saxophone in the combined PISD elementary schools under Mrs. Irene Weger. I continued to play for the next seven years and into college. We all have been to football games (especially when PHS was playing the Plano, Greenville, Richardson, Sherman, Denison, etc) in a rough district. Sometimes the band may have made the highlight film as a bright spot. Under Mr. Floyd Wegers direction, few of us realized how his talents would truly shape our lives--mentally, physically and most importantly, musically! I was a slightly better than average musician but Mr. Weger saw more in me than I did in myself! He wrote a letter of recommendation to Dr. Ferguson and I was offered a half scholarship to march in Alabamas Million Dollar Band! Me?? Really??? Small town boy chose to stay home, but being a lifetime band groupie was and is a title I say with great pride! To hear a nationally know sportscaster slam college marching bands, and later apologizing for his mis- statement will take many students of all ages and talents some time to get over it. Jim Rome, you are forgiven in my book...but your insensitivity disappoints me---and Im guessing all my band friends across the nation!
