NOUN CLAUSES Konuyu açıklamaya örnekle başlayalım: He knows my name. özne fiil nesne Adımı biliyor. He knows that I am a singer. özne fiil isim cümleciği Şarkıcı olduğumu biliyor. Birinci cümlede, fiile ‘neyi biliyor?’ diye sorulduğunda cevap veren kısım (my name) nesnedir. Aynı soruyu ikinci cümleye de sorarsak that I am a singer=şarkıcı olduğumu diye bir cevap alırız ki bu da nesne durumundadır. Ancak ikinci cümlenin nesnesi, kendi içinde öznesi (I) ve fiili (am) olan bir cümledir aslında. İşte böyle kendi içinde bir cümle olmakla birlikte bir ana cümleye bağlı olan ve ‘ne, neyi?’ sorularına cevap veren cümleciklere isim cümlecikleri denir. Whether (or not), cümlenin öznesi durumunda da kullanılabilir: Whether the students will be happy (or not) depends on the teacher. Öğrencilerin mutlu olup olmayacakları öğretmene bağlı. Whether (or not) the famous singer was the spy is still unknown. Ünlü şarkıcının casus olup olmadığı hâlâ bilinmiyor. 6. Soru sözcükleri ile: The policeman asked me ‘Where are you going?’ The policeman asked me where I was going. Polis bana ‘nereye gidiyorsun?’ diye sordu. Polis bana nereye gittiğimi sordu. I don’t know where the general manager of the company lives. Şirketin genel müdürünün nerede oturduğunu bilmiyorum. The Ministers don’t know how they can prevent air pollution.
