Thank you for all that you do, Team Sanergy By The Numbers 345 Fresh Life Toilets 170 Fresh Life Operators 13,000 Users Per Day 1,806 Metric Tons of Waste Removed from Community James Mutuku Residence: Mukuru, Nairobi Position: Fresh Life Operator We all experience challenges from time to time but James Mutuku , a father of four, faced more than most recently. About a year ago, he purchased and installed three Fresh Life Toilets and his Fresh Life business was thriving with more than 70 customers per day. In August 2013, a fire broke out in his nearby sewing shop, destroying both the shop and damaging the toilets. What could have been a major disaster for many did not frighten James. He patiently rebuilt his FLTs with the help of Sanergy. James’ Fresh Life Business is now operational and most of his customers are now back to using his Fresh Life Toilets. “I am now back on my two feet and will continue to expand my business once am done recovering my initial losses”. James confesses that it is his customers who inspired him to rebuild because they kept asking when the Fresh Life Toilets would be operational again! They loved the freshness and the cleanliness of his Fresh Life Toilet and he felt motivated to re-open again because he knew that he would still have customers. This shows the great impact that the Fresh Life Toilets are now having on the community members who use them. They appreciate that they now have affordable, hygienic sanitation when they need to access a toilet. The two businesses were also the family’s lifeline and he had to ensure that his four children were well taken care of. Mutuku’s story is a shining example of how our Fresh Life Operators seek to thrive amidst the challenges that sometimes occur in their day-to-day operations. It is also a lesson to us all that, with the right mindset, we can overcome any challenge in life. John Wambua Position: Warehouse Assistant Our teammate of the month is John Wambua. He was chosen as teammate of the month because of developing the warehouse from a small room to a well organized go down through collaboration, pragmatic innovation, and relentless pursuit of excellence! John’s determination to succeed has seen him rise from night guard at Sanergy’s original office to warehouse assistant. John who hails from the rural Makueni County left home a month after finishing high school in 2009 to look for work opportunities in Nairobi. Determined to eke out a living and help support his younger siblings, he worked odd jobs and finally got a job at Sanergy in July 2011 as a night guard. He was quickly promoted to day guard, then office assistant and then Warehouse Assistant – a role that involves managing the demands of vendors, staff and FLOs - in May 2012. John recalls that operations at the warehouse started out really small and he had to co-ordinate the procurement of all materials – of which there are many when you consider our business-in-a-box, our marketing, and our manufacturing supplies. This experience proved invaluable as it meant he knew the ins and outs of all parts of our operations, and this has made him more adept at his work. Indeed, on a typical day, Wambua ensures that all the teams have any materials that they need to carry out their work. He also ensures that he liaises with procurement to replenish any supplies that are out of stock. “By understanding the basic work of most of the teams, I am able to provide better services and can better monitor the usage of these materials.”.John is hoping to improve on his knowledge this year by undertaking some computer classes and gain a certificate in Inventory Management. John really appreciates the opportunities he has earned at Sanergy: “Sanergy has really made a difference in my life, I now know that my future is bright because I have a steady income and can support my siblings back home.” And he has some powerful advice for youth like him, “Hard work and persistence is the key to realizing your dreams”.
