NOVOSTI IZ MONTEVIDEA, URUGVAJ, SA SKUPA ITU ,NA KOJEM JE PRIJAVLJENA I DELEGACIJA UDRUŽENJA BIOGEN SMART SUSTAINABLE CITIES UNESCO, ITU and the Uruguayan government have teamed up to organise a series of one off events dedicated to ‘Smart Sustainable Cities’ Tuesday 11th March 2014, in Montevideo (Uruguay), a number of national and international experts, government and private sector representatives, international organisations, students, and civil society organisations gathered for the first day of the series of events dedicated to Smart Sustainable Cities. The events, which are taking place in the MERCOSUR headquarters in Montevideo from the 11th -14th March 2014, were excellently opened by Minister Roberto Kreimerman from Uruguay’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, Ms. Susana Vidal, UNESCO Montevideo, Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean, Mr. Ahmed Zeddam, ITU-T Study Group 5 “Environment and Climate Change”, Chairman, Mr Armando Irineo Castaingdebat, President of Uruguay’s Congress of Mayors and Sergio Scarabino, Head of ITU Area Office in Santiago. During yesterday´ sessions not only did selected national and international guest experts from the field discuss the concept of Smart Sustainable Cities but also the role of policies and standards to promote them. Minister Kreimerman highlighted that Smart Sustainable Cities are important to the Uruguayan government because they complement their vision and strategy. According to the Minister, Uruguay has a strong agenda connecting ICTs with energy, environment and business development. The concept of Smart Sustainable Cities, underlined the Minister, is totally coherent with this strategy. Mr Sergio Scarabino provide some examples on how ITU is assisting countries to shape smart sustainable cities in Latin America and Ms. Cristina Bueti, in charge of the Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities in ITU, presented to the public the current definition that is under global consultation: “A smart sustainable city uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) to provide enhanced quality of life to its citizens, improved efficiency of services and sustainable development. Such a city meets the needs of today without sacrificing the needs of future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects”. Ms Bueti invited experts to send comments to ITU until 30 April 2014. Carolina Cosse, Antel´s CEO, offered a comprehensive overview on Uruguay´s strengths and opportunities towards fostering Smart Sustainable Cities, particularly in Montevideo. The innovative use of ICT’s to help build more liveable and sustainable cities was also highlighted during one of yesterday’s sessions along with the need to develop international key performance indicators and standards which are necessary elements for the development of Smart Sustainable Cities. In this regard, it was particularly observed the relevance of education for supporting the changes needed in society for the advancement of such cities. The series of events will continue as from this Wednesday 12th March covering issues such as environmental challenges of e-waste in Latin America, the role of policies and standards for effective e-waste management, building sustainable businesses and strategies through e-waste management: turning a e-challenge into an e-opportunity.
