NOW UPLOADED - Lesson 3 in our regular, on-line, build-up Wet on Wet Watercolour Painting course - Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart [Series 2] - available through #artworkshopwithpaul via #vimeo - https://vimeo/ondemand/artworkshopwithpaulwc2/113432057 YOU JOIN PAUL TAGGART AS STARTS WORK ON THE FIRST LAYER OF THIS START-TO-FINISH LANDSCAPE PAINTING TUTORIAL in which you will be working solely using the Wet on Wet Technique in Watercolours. Wet on Wet, can be worked on its own, or in conjunction with the other two principal techniques in watercolours – Wet on Dry and Line & Wash. AN INVALUABLE TECHNIQUE TO EXPLOIT AND MAXIMISE SO THAT YOU CAN DEVELOP YOUR INDIVIDUAL STYLE. SUBJECT MATTER – you can either work along with Paul, using his five free-to-download photographs; or on your own reference photographs. HAVING WORKED OUT YOUR COMPOSITION AND TRANSFERRED IT TO YOUR STRETCHED WATERCOLOUR PAPER – you will now embark on the first steps of painting - however; before you do, follow Paul’s example – step back, look at your composition and make any changes you feel will enhance your composition. PROTECTING WITH MASKING FLUID – Paul’s focal point in this composition is the boat, which he describes as seeming to ‘float’ within the landscape; when he first saw it. This is what drew him to this as an intriguing subject for a painting. With its sharp clean lines and focussed detail, this requires protecting from subsequent paint layers. Another bright area, being the bright white sun, suspended in a misty sky – with its companion reflection on the water’s surface. All three areas are given protection through the application of masking fluid. Finally, delicate rain splashes on the water’s surface ar also protected. Although seemingly simple, this stage is an essential element of working wet-on-wet. FIRST LAYER – BLOCKING IN THE MASSES – working from light to dark, requires that this first layer is blocked in using the lightest colour mixes to effect the ultimate lightest of highlight colours. These are applied as intense, fluid washes, applied in sections, working from the back of the composition to the front – in other words, from the top of the paint to the bottom. Paul is keen to stress throughout this lesson that you must work on this layer at your own pace and in your way. Although Paul is shown working in larger sections, you may find it more appropriate to work on smaller sections – this is not about keeping up with Paul, it is about settling into a comfortable working pattern that suits you. Packed full of information and filmed in real-time, you will be able to see every brush-stroke, every correction, every colour mix and hear Paul explain his every move and decision, through his running commentary – for as Paul’s regular followers know, he does not hold anything back. Paul Taggart’s philosophy is to reveal all, explain all and withhold nothing; so that you can develop and enjoy your experience of working in watercolours. FINALLY Paul finishes off by removing this first layer of masking fluid and shows how lift-off can be used to correct and resolve certain areas which require refinement. He explains that masking fluid will come into play again as he progresses through the next layer.
