NR railways, had first, second(business) and economy, i think. you could sleep, dine, bath/shower and kaka with pleasure. cant forget the bar. how do i know. the missionaries took us everywhere. i remember the LUANGWA line and KAFUE line later in the 70s. but back then, the military, the police, and government had their own cars. no FedEx either. only a notice to pickup packages at station. dont ask how I found this picture. have always been fascinated by the freight and passenger trains. 1967 till 1970 we have fun. wed hear the train whistle. run barefooted from nakowa primary, in zimba, along a path in the bush to the railroad. put our ears to track and estimate how long the train would take to reach us. wed put empty cans, rocks, safety pins, vaseline, sand etc on the track. thinking the behemoth would tip over. sadly it always passed by. the freight was most frightening. the driver or assistant would sometimes spray hot water with water hose at us, from the boiler. reminding us to not to get close to track. and what would do we do? throw rocks at the train, swearing and wishing their mother dead. lol. its all I remember at the age of 4-5. some of it told to me.
