NSW -- Severe Weather Warning -- UPDATE Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts Issued at 10:30 pm EST on Sunday 18 August 2013. DAMAGING WINDS FOR PARTS OF SOUTHEAST NSW Weather Situation A strong cold front is crossing southeast New South Wales tonight/Monday morning. Northwesterly winds are increasing ahead of the front, particularly higher ground. A much colder, gusty southwesterly stream will follow the front with widespread snow showers on the Alps. Damaging winds averaging about 60 km/h with gusts to 100 km/h are forecast for the Snowy Mountains district tonight and are likely to extend to the Southern Tablelands, Australian Capital Territory and Central Tablelands forecast districts during Monday morning. Damaging winds are also a possibility for the Illawarra and South Coast districts Monday morning, particularly higher parts. Blizzard conditions are expected for Alpine areas tonight and Monday, and winds about the Alpine Peaks may gust to 130 km/h. Wind gusts to 125 km/h were recorded at Thredbo Top Station today, and 89 km/h at Cooma Airport. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 5:00 am EST Monday.
