*** NSWSC NEWSFLASH - RARE GEMINIDS ASTEROIDAL METEOR SHOWER EXPECTED TO PEAK ON SUNDAY NIGHT *** #geminidmeteorshower #space #nswscweather Interesting things are expected to happen in the night sky over Sunday night in Australia, with an extremely visible meteor shower expected to peak with plenty to see. The meteor showers, known as the Geminid, is one of three major meteor showers and is the most visible, as it can be witnessed in both hemispheres of the world. It is said that as the Earth passes through debris left behind by the asteroid Phaethon, there should be an impressive light-show. Dr. Tanya Hill, astronomer at the Melbourne Planetarium has spoken about some interesting information in regards to the shower. Were actually going to be looking at debris form an asteroid thats out there in space and the earth is currently ploughing through it, she said. There is a likely chance of shooting stars being spotted, and despite the moon rising at 1am, the meteor shower will still be definitely seen. Her advice on the best viewing experience is looking in a north-east direction, with northern cities like Brisbane expecting the shower by about 9pm, then places like Sydney and Melbourne by 11pm and Hobart by 11.20pm. Such meteor showers are much brighter and last much longer, maximising the opportunity to spot the space phenomenon. Interested in catching a glance?
