NUM rejects revised Northam Platinum wage offer, makes counter proposal WEDNESDAY, 15 JANUARY 2014 17:32 Mining Weekly Online reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Wednesday that its members have rejected Monday’s revised wage offer by Northam Platinum. The two parties met on Monday under the auspices of the CCMA to resolve an ongoing wage strike at the Zondereinde mine that has entered its eleventh week. Northam improved its two-year offer by 0.5% for categories 2 to 8 employees, who would see a total wage offer increase to 9.5% for core workers and 9% for noncore workers. They would also receive a 9% increase in the living-out allowance and a once-off payment of R3,000. Category 9 to 10 employees were offered an 8% increase for core employees, a 7.5% for noncore employees and a 7% improvement in the living-out allowance. The NUM said in a statement that, while its members had rejected the offer, the union had made an “alternative proposal”, which could not be divulged until it was presented to Northam management on Wednesday afternoon.
