NUMBER 2: February snowstorm dumps close to two feet of snow It proved to be a one-two punch that knocked out all of us when a massive storm dumped close to two feet of snow in mid-February. It became one of the biggest snowstorms ever in Roanoke and the New River Valleys. You turned to wdbj7 for updates as the snow began to fall and now looking back its our number two story of the year. February 12 and 13 gave us more snow than many of you would want to see all winter. It started around noon the first day falling fast, but it wasnt keeping some inside. But by the next morning it was clear we all would need to dig out. Those at WDBJ7 even got stuck for a time. It was when daylight came that we saw the true extent. Cars were abandoned and plows were out. The National Guard was even ready. Then came the second punch of snow that made it historic. And then we had this secondary wave that came through and usually that might drop a little bit of snow here and there but this one took some of that moisture and just blossomed it a pretty significant downpour of snow,” said Meteorologist Leo Hirsbrunner. Twenty-eight inches was the high mark at a spot in Montgomery County. And in Roanoke and Blacksburg, the official total became the third highest snowfall in recorded history. While it could have given us cabin fever, it was time to play. WDBJ7 caught some kids snowboarding. A group of friends even made a trip for food in a four-wheeler. Although its been nearly a year, the memory of this storm is still frozen in our minds and wont likely thaw anytime soon. ift.tt/1Hhg6dj
