NUMBER ONE QUALIFICATION OF A PASTOR Posted: 21 Oct 2014 03:00 AM PDT The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil (1 Timothy 3:1-7). As you read this passage, you should note the extremely high qualifications of a pastor. These qualities primarily deal with character. Character leads to trust; trust leads to leadership. At the core of leadership is character. A man can be a great speaker, singer, and organizer, have charisma, but if he does not possess character, then his life will fall apart eventually. You cannot get this from college or seminary. You get this from life. You must live your life as a Christ-follower. Today, I will begin with the first of the qualifications in relationship to God. The pastor must be called by God. The word “aspires” comes from a root word meaning “to reach or stretch out.” It carries the idea of having a deep, burning desire to be something one is not. What I mean by this is that no one just decides to go into the ministry. The call of God is a mysterious, but very real, event! If God has called a man to preach the Gospel, then that man is a handpicked man! Thank God for your pastor, and pray for him regularly
