#NUTSHELL – JULY 30th — FAITH, A LIFE PRESERVER – Joshua 3:7-17; Isaiah 43:1-4: Talk about a step of faith! When time came for the Israelites to cross the Jordan and possess the Promised Land, the river was at flood stage. Have you ever seen a flooding river? It’s a powerful and frightening sight. Picturesque water that normally meanders along becomes surging currents, several times wider, deeper and faster than normal. They wash debris along and carry it at breakneck speed. The Lord commanded the priests to step into the water (Joshua 3:15-16) and the water didn’t part until the feet of the priests were wet. God could have parted the river first and then sent the priests across. He was testing their faith, seeing if they would obey His command even when it seemed illogical and frightening to do so. As their feet sunk into the water, the waters parted and He made a way to the other side. Sometimes we feel we’re stepping in over our heads. We talk about drowning in a sea of red ink. We talk about being overwhelmed with temptation or facing a flood of problems. But because of a wonderful promise in Isaiah 43:1-4, we can still stand upright. The water you’re navigating is not for you to sink in, but rather swim in. God says obedience is better than sacrifice. Obey the Lord even when it seems illogical (the priests). When he calls us, He will make a way. Where He leads us, He will go before us. That is why we can step into “worrisome waters” and walk by faith. “As…the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water…the waters which come down from upstream stood still and rose in a heap very far away.” Please read the passage, it will encourage and bless you.
