#NUTSHELL – OCTOBER 22nd — ALIGNED WITH WHO? – Joshua 9:1-27: The Wikipedia Internet research source in an article titled, “List of Treaties” cites all the treaties and agreements formalized between nations and groups from 1283 B. C. through 2009; there are hundreds and hundreds of them. Comparing this long list of agreements with a list of wars, arguments and broken treaties between nations and groups in the same time period calls into question the usefulness of human agreements. As the euphemism goes, “Treaties are made to be broken.” One of the mistakes Joshua made as the post-Moses leader of Israel came shortly after the nation entered the Promised Land with the mandate to clear out the pagan residents. A certain group of men representing the town of Gibeon, came to Joshua deceptively posing as travelers from a city outside of Canaan. They asked Joshua to make a covenant with them to insure their protection, which Joshua did without consulting the Lord. Because of that treaty the men of Gibeon remained a thorn in Israel’s side. When we look at the world today and the many alliances made between nations, tribes, businesses and individuals we can observe from the timeline of history many do not work out or provide peace and safety. We can rest assured that however chaotic things appear on earth, God is still in charge. He desires for us as Christ-followers not to make any alliances that is not compatible with God’s will and purpose in our lives. “A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge and becomes surety for his friend” (Proverbs 17:18). Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, “Don’t make alliances with unbelievers whether for affection or protection, our hearts belong to God.”
