NVVM LECTURE AT SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE: The Shrine of Remembrance - TopicsExpress

NVVM LECTURE AT SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE: The Shrine of Remembrance is pleased to present, The Evolution of a National Museum - on Wednesday 14 August at 12.30pm. In this lecture Gary Parker, Chief Executive of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum, will reveal how, over 20 years, a Land Rover and trailer evolved to become a National Museum and the spiritual home of Vietnam veterans. The National Vietnam Veterans Museum (NVVM) was founded by Vietnam veterans to help and support veterans to cope better with their experiences during the war and after their return to Australia. Today, the NVVM seeks to remember, interpret and understand the experience of the veterans of the Vietnam era and the enduring impact of the war on society. Rather than dwelling on the story of war, the NVVM focuses on the stories of the people involved. The evolution of the NVVM continues with an ambitious program of rejuvenation, including the creation of four new galleries: a Remembrance Gallery, and separate Air, Ground and Naval Operations galleries as well as new summer exhibitions with state of the art technology. With these developments, the NVVM aims to enhance the visitor experience, further strengthen links to the wider Vietnam veteran community and become a major tourist attraction with museum accreditation. Gary Parker is the CEO of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum and an experienced ex-service man. After joining the Army as an apprentice at 15 years of age, he completed 22 years of service including stints as an engineer (RAE) in Vietnam and Papua New Guinea, before resigning as a Major. Gary was then involved in a range of corporate activities in Training and Development, Business Development and Human Resources. After retirement and relocation to Phillip Island, Gary became involved in the embryonic Vietnam Veterans Museum. Shortly after, the Museum was forced to relocate and the veterans chose to build their own Museum which has developed to become the National Vietnam Veterans Museum.
