NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has released a report documenting the widespread illegal and abusive practices fostered by apartment-sharing websites like Airbnb. His report found that nearly three out of four NYC Airbnb rentals are illegal; that commercial operators supply more than a third of the units and get more than a third of the revenue, with just 6% of “hosts” making 37% of the income. The report also shows that about 2,000 units are rented out over half the year, effectively removing them from residential use, with many buildings having 60% or more of their units used as illegal hotels more than half the year. Its time for tougher enforcement of the law against illegal hotels!
