Na waa ooohhhh for some of this title holders in the North West Region. One of the most respected tration in the country: cameroonjournal/greed%20power.html (Cameroon Journal), Bamenda, Sept. 6 - A Council of Elders of the North West Fons’ Union (NOWEFU), meeting Thursday, Sept . 5 at Mankon Fon’s palace, issued a strongly worded communiqué accusing incumbent President, Chief Teche Njie of Ngyen Muwa, of selling traditional titles and cultural values of the region, and emptying the coffers of the union. The communiqué states among other things, attempts by Chief Njie to marginalize first class Fons of the NW, and attempts to marginalize the NOWEFU Council of Elders which they said have resulted to divisions among the people of the North West. Equally prominent on the charges leveled against Njie is the lack of transparency and accountability of funds he allegedly solicited across the national territory in the name of NOWEFU. The embattled North West Fons in an effort to regain lost glory, state in their statement that conscious of their sacred duty to protect, preserve, defend and promote the cherished customary and traditional heritage of the North West people damaged by Chief Teche Njie unanimously decide that; “All traditional titles and certificates awarded under doubtful circumstances by Chief Teche and clique are questionable and shall be subjected to thorough review by the NOWEFU General Assembly.” The marketing of titles that contribute to the degradation of North West culture, and tradition should stop immediately. The chairman of the constitutional review committee, Fon of Bafut, empowered to co-opt the council of elders in the preparation of a revised constitution to be presented to the General Assembly. Talking to the CJ on the sidelines of the meeting, Fon Ndofua Zofua of Babungo, Secretary-General of NOWEFU, revealed that when Teche took over, the union had about 16million FCFA in its coffers. But at the moment the account doesn’t have up to 100.000 FRS, and nothing can be shown as having been done with the money. He added that as Secretary General, he is the co-signatory to the account, but he does not know when money is withdrawn from the account. “Can you imagine that one just receives a phone call to come here or there and upon arrival, you discover a scene you cannot explain what is happening, just to be given 10. 000Frs at the end without any explanation as to who and why the money is given? Questioned Fon Zofua. “With 200. 000Frs, you can get a traditional title from NOWEFU! It is unacceptable,” he added. Chief Njie, who earlier backed out of the meeting impulsively with some of the fons belonging to his clique, was later accosted by the Journal in his hotel room. He told the Journal that NOWEFU constitution does not provide for an organ called the Council of Elders. He said he left the meeting prematurely because he (NOWEFU President) could not be in a NOWEFU meeting, and other people signing documents for NOWEFU. As for the allegations of attempts to marginalize paramount and First class Fons of the union, he invoked the Southern Cameroons Gazette, arguing that it does not classify Fons. “Once a registered member of NOWEFU, all Fons are equal. However, for age differences some Fons would be respected not because of classification,” he stated. On the mismanagement and embezzlement charges, he said NOWEFU has a Treasurer General, and that it was audited recently, and the treasury department was given a clean bill of health, so he cannot see how they now say he has embezzled funds. He further explained that during his inauguration, 15million Frs. was raised and the money has been put into the completion of the Union’s Secretariat which he says is now at 90% completion. Fon Teche quipped to CJ that an executive meeting of the Union will be called in the days ahead to observe and make a way forward out of the crisis. He concluded by dishing out a message of peace and forgiveness to his peers adding that if someone has personal problems with him, this should not be the best way to solve them.
