Name an actor in a role that you feel is unjustly unheralded and deserves another look and more widespread notice. One for me: Shirely Maclaine in the 1988 John Schlesinger film, Madame Sousatzka. Just a few years after her Best Actress Oscar win for Terms of Endearment Maclaine gave a wonderful performance in this sadly neglected movie. She plays the flamboyant Irina Sousatzka, a Russian/American piano teacher in England with a tragic past who lives vicariously through her students, in particular a young boy. Maclaine is a kind of cross between Norma Desmond and Auntie Mame with a strong sense of loss and poignancy in a performance that lingers long in the mind. Co-starring Peggy Ashcroft and Twiggy. Its too bad more people arent familiar with this film and that its not even readily available for dvd viewing. Heres hoping that changes someday soon.
