Nana Anna (2011) via La Troienne by hsw Among female families, that is the chain of broodmares leading to the latest foal from off- the La Troienne assembly line are perhaps the most cultivated of recent decades- La Troienne, was a bay mare of French extraction, sired by Teddy x Helene de Troie x Helicon- the latter was bred in England - in truth he was a sun of substantial Cyllene, one of the great stallions on the road to Secretariat etc. - foaled in 1895 Cyllene was a chestnut by Bona Vista x Arcadia x Isonomy - he was owned Sir Rose. I’d hazard to guess- and as a youth Cyllene, was no bigger than a cricket- so puny, that his people declared it pointless to address the classic with him- but as is sometimes the case with runts they develop in Napoleons! In due time Cyllene, became very fast and equally as handsome and he further developed into a colt of sumptuous speed and the tenacity of Sen. Cruz - his stamina declared with a win in the heroic Ascot Gold Cup - when put out into the stud ranks he was a powerhouse, getting “derby” winners in Tagalie & Lemberg & Minouru & Cicero, the cherry on his stud cake being leading sire son Polymelus, soon after sire to Phalaris and the rest is thoroughbred history- As far as Teddy, was concerned he also was the sire of Plucky Liege, whose sons Bull Dog and Sir Galahad III etc. had a tremendous impact on world bloodlines construction- the family of Teddy, has also appeared in recent days via ship sized Point Given, if memory serves as it goes back in tale female to either Teddy’s dam or his sister?? Needless to say La Troienne carried some fine bloodlines and soon fell into the hands of Kentucky hard boots- particularly Col ER Bradley, who milked his broodmare with enough skill to produce the line of the century entitled 1-x by those who make such determinations stick- The legacy of La Troienne is mostly thru her cast of excellent daughters - foremost >Black Helen & Businesslike ^ Big Hurry & Big Event & Belle of Troy & Belle Historie & Baby League & Bee Ann Mac - La Troienne also had 1 son of magnificence, Bimelech, winner of the Preakness and Belmont and an unlucky 2nd in the Kentucky Derby, when he was pointed backwards for most of the 1st furlongs- in the stud he sired Better Self, sire of tubby ball of calories Aspidistra, later dam to fleetest of racehorses Dr. Fager!- Some of the greats associated with the La Troienne family have been Smarty Jones and Buckpasser & Easy Goer & Princess Rooney- as for the family in Europe, I leave it to bloodlines fellow students to examine the 1-x legacy over there- off the top of me pate I cannot recollect a 1-x winner of the Oaks or the Ebor or the Doncaster Cup- but there well may a treasure trove of 1-x types out yonder in Europe- In the recent season, the 1-x superiority if it is indeed yet one, has manifested itself with such notable performers as > Nana Anna & Home Sweet Aspen & the Argentine bred, Private Jet, who excelled in the sunshine state a while back- also on the modern day honor roll for the 1-x family have been > Thunder Moccasin & Castaway, Artemus Kitten & Stephanie’s Kitten & John Wayne Stakes winner->Cresco Direct Hit? (hope I got that right) also Miranda Diane and Hunter’s Bay & Frolic’s Revenge & Newfangled & Just Got In, a winner of the My Dear Stakes- one can detect the 2012-13 season has not been a vintage one for the troops of 1-x -was it Revolutionary who was the best of their colts this season? what happened to him?- also black type was handed out to these 1-x runners if memory serves > Mummings Sister & Beware The Devil & G3 winner Pacific Ocean - also > Picks Pride & the aforementioned Revolutionary, who loomed important following his win in the 2013 Louisiana Derby- However you slice it, the family is certainly worth study and following the foals which come from it, and it is a most interesting way to play the races and it certainly lowers the amount of horses a handicapper must approve or disapprove of- yet searching out the 1-x runners is not an entirely simple task- but establishing a “virtual” stable component of La Troienne runners should be a fun way to learn bloodlines and make a few $$ as well- for as a whole I would say they outperform offspring of lesser family groups- Hs watnik @2013
