Nandi, Kenya: The mood at the ongoing music festivals was dampened when a bus travelling to the fete rolled down a steep escarpment in Nandi Hills, killing a teacher and injuring 15 people. The bus belonging to Booker Academy in Mumias veered off Chepsangor area on Thursday afternoon. The deceased is one of the four teachers travelling with ten students to Mombasa for the competition. Nandi East OCPD Patrick Macharia said the teacher succumbed to injuries at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital where he had been transferred. “The cause of the accident has not been fully established but we suspect the vehicle encountered some mechanical challenges before plunging 200 metres down the cliff,” he said. The accident happened at a steep section where the driver of a 14-seater matatu from Eldoret enroute to Kisii lost control of the vehicle and it rolled, killing 14 people in February, this year. According to the police, occupants of the bus were four teachers, a child belonging to one of them, 10 students and a driver. “We rushed to the scene immediately and retrieved all those who were on board with the help of the residents. There was no fatality at the spot of the accident ,” Macharia said. The OCPD said the bus was traveling from Mumias to Mombasa when the incident occurred and they suspect that the driver was new and unfamiliar with the road.
