Nandi governor Cleophas Lagat is visiting the US in an investor-hunting drive. Dr Lagat left for a week-long tour of the superpower on Wednesday where he will meet and urge investors to set up industries in Nandi County which will help create job opportunities. “Nandi County Government is looking for investors to invest in the county and will support them to start industries and create employment opportunities for youths and generate revenue to boost the local economy,” he said. Dr Lagat described Nandi County as a sleeping giant whose potential, including tourism and agriculture, has not been exploited. He said that important historical sites such as the Cliff of Death should be developed to attract more visitors. Dr Lagat said the county government would market local attractions, including rare antelopes found near Kingwar Swamps in Nandi Central District, to prospective tourists and investors. “Nandi County has enough land for investors to build industries, set up other investments and provide quality services to residents,” he said. Dr Lagat said that China had agreed to renovate Kapsabet District Hospital at a cost of Sh2 billion, adding that donors had pledged to fund construction of a medical training institute at the hospital. He said that with proper management, the county could become one of the richest in the country. Dr Lagat urged professionals, including athletes, from the community to invest in the county. “The county has a high number of youths who have completed college education and are unemployed because of lack of industries yet it has huge fertile land that can be invested in,’’ he said. Kapsabet town, Dr Lagat said, would be linked with US cities to attract investments. Some 400 acres of land are required for better planning and expansion of Kapsabet town, he said. Dr Lagat said that county headquarters will be build under a five-year strategic plan and urged officials to provide quality services. He said that funds from the national Treasury will be accounted for, adding that a project meant to provide families with piped water was under way.
