Narwal mandi to soon have modern multi utility cold storage: Bhalla ‘Rs. 3.70 cr plan for improving basic amenities at F&V markets’ JAMMU, JULY 21-Minister for Housing, Horticulture and Culture Mr. Raman Bhalla has said that Government is working on a project to establish a modern multi-utility and commodity cold storage at Narwal Fruit and Vegetable mandi. He said a detailed project report costing Rs. 2 crore has already been prepared and the steps are afoot to start the work soon. The Minister was interacting with the traders during his visit to fruit and vegetable mandi at Narwal to take stock of their problems, here today. Director Horticulture Jammu Mr. Anil Sharma, Executive Engineer Horticulture Department besides officers President Fruit Association Mr. Rajesh Gupta, President Vegetable Association, Mr. Ramesh Parihar, Chief Executive Mandies Mr. Digvijay Gupta, Asstt. Director Marketing Mr. Priyadarshini Parihar and other representatives of both the associations accompanied the Minister. Mr. Bhalla informed that the land available with HPMC will be utilized for construction of the cold storage. He said Government was very keen to develop all the fruit and vegetable mandies with modern line basic facilities. He said there is no constraint of funds under Horticulture sector. The Minister assured the traders that their genuine issues regarding drainage and sewerage of the F&V Mandi, augmentation of tube well to overcome the water supply scarcity, lack of basic infrastructure and delayed completion of gutted and additional new sheds will be redressed on priority. Mr. Bhalla instructed the concerned implementing agencies to construct a meeting hall in the fruit mandi at the earliest. He directed ERA to start the augmentation work on tube well and overhead tank. He also directed the constructing agency of the Horticulture (P&M) department to start the mechmadization and drainage facility at the F&V markets after monsoon season, for which Government has released Rs. 50 lakh out of Rs. 2 crore prepared detailed project report submitted by the Horticulture Department for immediately start of the works. He said in addition to completion of two auction platforms, Government has released Rs. 1.70 crore for renovation of dilapidated condition auction sheds. He said that one recently gutted and additional new auction sheds are in progress at F&V mandi and would be completed within stipulated time frame. He asked the executing agency to complete all the allied works of the projects so that the place meets the desired purpose at the earliest. He said Government has planned to set up fruit and vegetable mandies at all potential areas of the state so that the farmers could get marketing facilities at their doorsteps. Responding to the demand of uninterrupted power supply to the mandies, the Minister informed that instructions have been issued to Power Department for ensuring improved power in the markets. Mr. Bhalla asked the officers to motivate the growers and traders to ensure that quality fruit and vegetable were brought to the market, adding that in this era of competition the quality control is must and “We have to focus on this vital area to maintain the credibility of State’s horticulture produce”. He asked to gear up field functionaries for educating the fruit and vegetable growers about the horticulture sponsored schemes. The Minister stressed for exploring new markets to promote State’s horticulture products. He said horticulture was the mainstay of the state’s economy and all out efforts will be made to promote this vital sector appropriately across the country
