Nasarawa Crisis: Army kills Ombatse militia members Violence, triggered by ethnic militians, has rocked Nasarawa in the past four days. A detachment of soldiers stationed at Akwanga Local Government Area of troubled Nasarawa state, has overpowered and killed some members of the Ombatse militia in a prolonged exchange of gunfire, residents and a journalist said. A Lafia-based journalist, Ahmed Mohammed, told PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone that soldiers conducting a stop and search operation along the Akwanga-Lafia highway arrested two members of the Ombatse militia but an armed group of the militia emerge from a nearby bush and opened fire on the Army. He said the gun battle that ensued left many of the attackers dead. He added that the soldiers later took three dead bodies and three other members of the militia captured alive to Government House, Lafia. As at the time of publishing this, the soldiers are parading the arrested militia members and the three dead bodies before Governor Tanko Almakura. “The soldiers said they just brought the three bodies and three corpses to show the governor, and one of the arrested militia is wearing a full Mopol uniform, but we cannot establish now if he is a policeman or just wearing the uniform to disguise,” Mr. Mohammed said. He said, Mr. Almakura, who was away in Europe for the past 10 days, returned to the state capital on a chopper at about 5:35p.m. He immediately on arrival told journalists he would make a statewide radio and television broadcast later today after receiving full security briefing. Insiders in the Nasarawa state government said the governor chose to fly on a helicopter to Lafia because the Akwanga-Lafia highway was unsafe. More details later…
