Nasarawa LG polls: Blame APC for any failure, says Maku ================ (Voting materials were not delivered on time during the Saturday elections.) The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, has said the All Progressive Congress, APC, administration in Nasarawa State should be blamed for any misconduct in Saturday’s local government elections in the state. Speaking at Wakama Clinic polling unit, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government after casting his vote, Mr. Maku said that the Nasarawa Electoral Act was a perfect process. Mr. Maku said that members of the state electoral body should strive to write their names in gold by ensuring that the election is free and fair. He said that the process of announcing results at the ward and local government level was a good practice that would remove any doubts that results were manufactured at the government house. “I want to commend the Nasarawa State house of Assembly because for the first time they have given Nasarawa State an electoral act that conforms with the federal electoral act, where results are announced at every polling unit, ward, and local government headquarters,” he said. Mr. Maku explained that if the process is followed they would be no problem with the way the elections are conducted. “So if anything fails here, it will simply point to the (state) administration and not the law because it has guaranteed a free and fair election; what is remaining for the Nasarawa State Electoral Commission to do is to conform with the law,” he said. Meanwhile, voting in several parts of the state commenced late due to a delay in the distribution of election materials. Hours after the elections were scheduled to start, electoral officers and voters at various polling units in Lafia were seen waiting anxiously for the materials. The situation was also the same in Akwanga and Nasarawa Eggon local government areas, where voters at Wakama Dudu polling unit and Cooperative Polling unit respectively were also kept waiting. At Danburan D polling unit, Ciroma ward, Lafia, some of the voters expressed their disappointment. “It is unfortunate. I don’t know, maybe they want to disenfranchise us from electing candidates of our choice. I can say that no adequate preparation was made for this election,” a voter, Usman Ismail, said. The situation was the same at Kofar Mamman Yaro polling unit also in Ciroma ward, where worried looking voters awaited the commencement of the election. Yusuf Adamu, a PDP chieftain in the ward, described the situation as “unfortunate.” “To me they have a hidden agenda. They don’t want to do the election and would want to announce the result later. We are watching,” he said. Security agents were stationed in strategic locations within and around the state capital and movement of persons and vehicles were restricted throughout the state. Efforts to speak to the Chairman, Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, NASIEC, Abdullahi Modibbo, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to his mobile phone were not responded to.
