Nathans Natterings ~ We had a drive-in experience last night. I - TopicsExpress

Nathans Natterings ~ We had a drive-in experience last night. I cannot remember the last time we went to a drive-in theater, but I had been rolling the idea in my mind with nostalgic feelings fueled by my paying of DVDs of drive-in intermission ads of the TV. Fortunately, a drive-in has opened within ten miles of home recently. So we decided to go last night. And with decidedly mixed results. First of all, the drive-in, in Elko, Minnesota, had a pretty good snack bar with a nice menu -- an important factor for me. So I was happy at the outset. However, there was a real problem, as there is a baseball park in the same complex, and a game was going throughout the first feature (the only one we stayed for), with bright stadium lights all but overwhelming the image on the screen. Truly annoying, but not a complete washout. The management chooses pics that are clearly appropriate for drive-in audiences, and the movie we saw, and enjoyed quite a bit, was Guardians of the Galaxy, all awash in major CGI work and Marvel comics humor. The drive-in experience is clearly a family experience, and it was nice to see all the happy families out for a good time. I did miss having the clunky speakers of old. We tuned to an FM station to get the audio portion of the movie. It was serviceable. Instead of a PIC coil, we had a really strong citronella spiral that may, or may not, have worked (a few mosquitos buzzed us at first, and then we were no longer bothered). Would I do it again? Sure. But not on a night when a baseball game was scheduled.
