National Breast Cancer Foundation-funded researcher, Dr Peter Simpson, is part of a team of Australian scientists from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in QLD who have discovered a new way to identify and predict survival for aggressive breast cancer. Scientists compared genes in more aggressive breast cancer tumours, such as triple negative breast cancers, with genes in less aggressive forms of the disease. They discovered that more aggressive breast cancer tumours had two gene ‘signatures’ that were linked with poorer survival. Using this discovery, scientists hope to develop a blood test to more accurately predict which patients have more aggressive forms of breast cancer, so that they can be given more intense treatment at an earlier stage. Scientists may also use these gene signatures to develop more effective treatments for aggressive tumours. Find out more: goo.gl/YpqVfH
