National Conference information: Left Unity’s National Conference will be held on Saturday 29th March in Manchester. The location is the Museum of Science and Industry mosi.org.uk The venue is fully accessible, centrally located and has excellent facilities. The conference will run from 11am to 6pm, with registration starting at 10am. All members are invited to attend and information about registration will be made available soon. MOSI Access details • The building is wheelchair accessible and our conference hall is on the ground floor. • There are parking spaces designated for disabled people in their own car park. • There are 2 accessible toilets. • There is a loop system covering the whole room. • There is a screen half way down the room showing anything on the screen at the front (e.g. from a power point presentation). • There is an on-site café. • There are tables and chairs which can be moved around to suit. • The venue is close to both main railway stations. If you need anything else, like large print documents for example, please let us know in good time. Conference Agenda (details to be confirmed): 1. Any resolutions carried over from founding conference that have not already been dealt with by the Transitional National Council 2. Safe Spaces Policy 3. New campaigning resolutions submitted by members (with seconders) and branches 4. Policy commission resolutions subject to time available. Please note that there will be a further national policy conference, possibly in June, to discuss and agree further areas of policy. Pre-conference process: Following the requirements of the Left Unity constitution, the pre-conference process includes both an elections process and a resolutions process. Time is tight but we have attempted to provide a timetable which allows the maximum time to give all members and branches the opportunity to participate fully. 1. Election process: Candidates for the following posts are nominated by members and/or branches and elected by national online/postal ballot of all members: • Nationally-elected officers: national secretary; national membership and communications; nominating officer/elections co-ordinator; national treasurer; media officer; trade union officer • 4 principal spokespeople (2 men, 2 women) • 15 directly-elected national council members • Standing Orders Committee – 10 members (at least 50% women) • Disputes Committee – 7 members (at least 50% women) • Appeals Committee – 7 members (at least 50% women) (NB: members of the three committees cannot also be members of the National Council) All members will also be balloted by email/online or post, to elect their regional reps to the National Council. Deadlines: 20th February: Any member who wishes to have a postal vote rather than an email/online vote please notify Kate Hudson at [email protected] or at Left Unity, 5 Caledonian Road, London N1 9DX 20th February: Nominations in for all national positions (from members and branches) 6th March: Those nominated accept or decline and submit their electoral statements 10th - 24th March: Balloting of all members online or by post By 29th March: Results counted, checked and announced at conference 2. Resolutions process: 20th February: Deadline for receipt of campaigning resolutions for conference – can be submitted by members (with seconders) and/or branches Deadline for receipt of policy submissions from commissions that are ready to submit 24th February: Resolutions sent to branches 10th March: Amendments/compositing deadline; material sent to SOC for agenda preparation 24th March: Publishing and distribution of conference material and SOC report Further information will be available after the next Transitional National Council meeting which will be held in London on Saturday 8th February.
