National Mosque (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) The National Mosque is a uniquely designed building that embodies a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art. It’s design is based upon the grand mosque in Mecca with 48 small domes and the main dome has the character of a multi fold look like a semi-opened blue umbrella and the 73 meter tall minaret has the shape look like a closed umbrella. The building itself includes a main prayer hall, a main speech hall, a library, offices, an open courtyard, a minaret and a national heroes mausoleum. The main prayer hall is surrounded by deep veranda. They provide a praying area and can easily accommodate up to 5,000 people. Built in 1965 with the capacity to hold 15,000 people is seated proudly among 13 acres of beautifully landscaped ground, with gardens and fountains. The mosque was designed by UK architect Howard Ashley, and Malaysians Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim. With its very ultra-modern design is situated near the Perdana Botanical Garden (formerly known as the Lake Gardens). The location is just opposite the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. The national heroes mausoleum is situated at the back of the mosque, stands in a circular reflecting pool and is connected to the main building by a covered foot-bridge. It is circular in shape and is covered by a pleated shell concrete dome similar in shape to that of the main prayer hall but with only seven folds, inside the mausoleum with the former Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers’ tomb. Non muslim tourists are allowed into the mosque but they must be dressed in an appropriate manner as a matter of respect in this special place of worship. Especially for female, they must wear headscarves and wear dress with long sleeves and skirt or pants length over their knees.
