National Preparedness Month Emergency Tip # 22 Smoke Detectors Carbon Monoxide Detectors This will be redundant to most of you, but it is a good reminder. Why not designate September as the month that you change your batteries in your smoke detectors, also update your fire extinguisher. I have gone in many homes where the smoke detectors have beed disassembled or have no batteries. This is really a no brainer! You can only be notified if the thing works! Use this month, (unless of course you have another designated time) to change the batteries in your alarms. Do it in you flashlights, your weather radios, anything that you use that requires a battery. It really could save your life. We put flashlights in locations near doors so if the power is out and we have to go outside in the dark we will know exactly where to find one. What to do if your Carbon Monoxide Detector goes off ? If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, press the test reset button, leave the residence and call the fire department or 911. Trust your CO detector and avoid carbon monoxide poisoning with help from a certified firefighter in this free video on home safety. ehow/video_7513621_do-monoxide-alarm-goes-off_.html The manufacturer of First Alert, the leading brand of carbon monoxide detectors, recommends the following if the alarm goes off: Turn off appliances, or other sources of combustion at once. Immediately get fresh air into the premises by opening doors and windows. Call a qualified technician and have the problem fixed before restarting appliances. If anyone is experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headaches, dizziness, vomiting, call the fire department and immediately move to a location that has fresh air. Do a head count to be sure all persons are accounted for. Do not re-enter the premises until it has been aired out and the problem corrected. Please do NOT ignore these alarms, they are there for your survival. Hope this is of use..
