Nature Awareness 3/31/2014 - Wasp The wasp is an insect that is categorized more by what it is not than what it is. Its classification comes from the fact that it is an insect that is neither a bee nor an ant. Almost every human-labelled pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it, making wasps critically important in natural control of their numbers. Wasps are therefore being increasingly used in agricultural pest control as they prey mostly on other insects and have little impact on crops. It is also interesting to note that female wasps are the ones who have the stingers, which can deliver a potent venom. Females also have the ability to control the gender of their eggs as well and can store sperm inside their bodies for determined usage. For instance, if a female want to lay a male egg, all she has to do it leave that egg unfertilized, and due to the nature of wasp chromosomes the young will be born a male, while fertilizing the egg would then allow for the young wasp to be born female. The wasp as a totem is considered one of shape shifting and interdependence. Most wasp species are solitary, except when mating. And, unlike bees, which are hive oriented, the wasp is independent and prefers to work on his own rather than in a group. Solitary wasps have little patience and will swarm all over a task they are performing with a great deal of energy. Wasp people are therefore noted to be independent thinkers and might even have difficulty relating to authority figures. Interdependence in the balanced state of the independence so readily displayed by the wasp. Understanding ones place within the balance while still exercising individuality. Wasp comes with a message today... Your choices are your own, and you must live up to them, take responsibility for them, and ultimately follow them alone. There may be those who will swarm with you, but your path and your flight inherently belongs to you. Symbolism: balance, interdependence, potent defense, proactive choices, shape shifting.
