Nature Awareness 6/10/2014 - Silk Moth The silk moth originated in China but is now cultivate din silk farms all over the world. Sadly, this creature is now extinct in the wild, so to honor the silk moth I will discuss some of the natural features present from when it lived out in nature. The silk moth primarily occupied the tropical parts of Southeast Asia and could readily be found on mulberry trees and other plants. Long valued as a source of silk, these stout, pale cream, gray, and brown moths have a wing span of 2-6cm. Caterpillars of the commercial silk moth feed on mulberry; other species feed on fig and related plants. For the silk moth pupation does take place inside a dense silk cocoon, a true work of beauty. Even though the silk moth is extinct in the wild, it still lives in the modern world and has a blended totemic pattern that spans the natural and the commercial. Like most moths and butterflies that change themselves and birth anew from cocoons, this moth is associated with metamorphosis and rebirth. People working with this animal or who carry it as a totem should be prepared to undergo profound changes in their lives, however in an exceedingly gentle and cradled way. The metaphysical cocoon the silk moth brings allows for these metamorphoses to be gentle and well supported. Creativity, beauty, and the embracing of life are also symbolic of the silk moth. Concentrate on the silk moth today. Ask yourself if you are ready for a radical metamorphosis in your life? Are you in the process of building a cocoon and ready to go inward? Are you held gently within the cocoon, contemplating what is to come? Is today the day you burst forth to embrace life anew?... Symbolism: metamorphosis, embracing life, creativity, beauty, rebirth.
