Nature Is Guiding Us.......Always There is so much talk and confusion about the ideal diet as well as recently lots of people committing to ( and having the luxury ) of being vegan or going raw and making judgments about what constitutes a perfect diet that I always think back to indigenous cultures and what they survived and THRIVED on. There is sometimes a feeling of arrogance with modern generations when we think back to the past and assume wrongly that life was always hard..NB note how when this happens its the Victorian era with its polarity of rich and poor that invokes such pity that is nearly always bought up for discussion on death/plague/short lifespan and more. .. Dr Weston Price was a dentist and researcher who in the 1930s was so fascinated why native cultures who lived on traditional foods lived such long, yes long healthy lives that he wrote a book on it called...... Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. He studied tribal communities in New Zealand, and Africa as well as the Polynesians, Eskimos and more and this is what he discovered...... They all had a similar way of eating that nourished their comminuties for generations and this is what they all had in common... 1. All food was unprocessed and organic 2. All food was locally grown and seasonal 3. A high proportion of their food was raw 4. All ate fermented foods and many consumed raw unpasteurised diary 5 All ate animal fats, meats and saturated fats and raw butter and eggs 6 The only natural sweeteners they used were either raw honey or maple syrup... Their levels of natural vitamins and minerals were 10 x the levels we have to day as well as having high levels of enzymes to ensure healthy guts where 80 % of our immune system resides. I became a vegetarian at 17 and bought my daughter up as one but it didnt work for me ..I have tried veganism but I am healthier living in tune with my surroundings and eating fermented, high probiotic, high water content, high fibre. Gluten-free protein-rich foods. My body loves eggs and fish. After reading Ffyona Campbells book The Hunter Gatherer Way which links in with Dr Prices book it makes sense that humanity finds a way back to eating as we did before the advent of intensive farming which we know is inhuman and causing many to think the only solution is complete abstinence from animal products. If this works for you keep it up but if it doesnt maybe have a think about our past and how in the 2nd world war most households kept chickens...we were rationed to the point of starvation but the humble egg kept the British going. Its all about balance and listening and working with nature. Not everone can be vegan. Try telling an Eskimo or someone living in Greenland to live on vegetation. It doesnt work. Nature knows best and is constantly guiding us and reminding us with clues. ..are you listening?
