Nature versus Nurture.........well I may have a bit of insight for all of you out there who insist that being gay is a choice. 51 years ago I was given up for adoption and never new if I had biological brothers and sisters. I spent 51 years never quite fitting in and even though I had a loving family I always felt there was something missing. Every day was a struggle for me. I walked miles out of my way just to avoid the harassment and the physical abuse I went through. I would stay at school for hours after classes praying that the group of bullies out there waiting to show me would have finally dispersed. I would never eat in the school cafetiera because they would be there to hurl more abuse, food and punches at me, so a few months ago was pretty amazing for me because I found my birth family. Not only my birth mother but two brothers, one half and one full. Well here is the bomb, my full brother is gay. We grew up with totally different socio-economic situations and yet both turned out to be gay. We had no interaction with each other and yet both turned out to be gay. We had totally different parenting and yet both turned out to be gay. Our friends (what few we had) were different and we still both turned out to be gay. We each learned of the same God but both turned out to be gay. How can any one sit out there in judgment and tell me all and all of the others like me..... You choose to be gay Would we choose the pain that goes along with being a young gay individual? Would we choose to hide ourselves away because we are tired of being beaten up? Would we choose to never share the most important thing in life with all those around us, loving someone unconditionally and being loved back? I never regret the way I am or the way I love. I CHOOSE to stand up and demand to be counted! I CHOOSE for all those around me to hear my story and acknowledge the diversity in life. I CHOOSE to reach out a hand to any young person out there struggling with the same issues I struggled with. I CHOOSE to empower those young people and pass on the message You are all right! Life goes on and gets better My choices are ones that will hopefully affect the young people out there and encourage them to do the same with others. My choices are not about the person I love and loves me back but rather how I deal with the world around me and how I can possibly make it easier for those who follow me.
