Navaratri - nava means new and also nine. Ratri means to take refuge. Time of the year when we take refuge in the self. Devi is not somewhere in the heaven sitting on the tiger. She is there within us. Similarly 9 asuras come in our life time to time and we have to kill them using divine qualities of devi. 1. Madhu - craving of good experiences. Either of a person situation or thing. 2. Kaitab - aversion to bitter experiences. 3. Raktabijasur - a bad quality when gets deeply rooted in our blood. Way to come out is meditation and medication. 4. Maishasur - lazyness in the body. 5. Shumbh - doubting our own self. 6. Nishumbh - doubting everyone else. 7. Dhumralochan - blurry vision. Unclear mind. 8. Chanda - one who does exactly opposite of what has been told. 9. Munda - one who doesnt understand what has been told. Fasting is done so as to give rest to the stomoch. We keep stuffing food. So fasting gives rest. One must attend Pujas and yagyas and homas happening during navaratri.
