Nawawi #5. Narrated Aisha. The Prophet ﷺ said, He who innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e., Islam] that is not of it will have it rejected [by Allah].” Commentary. Like Hadith #1, this hadith is one of the most important hadith. Imam Nawawi said it should be memorized by every Muslim. This hadith is used as a criterion for judging external actions or performance of Ibadah (worship). If an action is not done in accordance with the Shariah (which is based on Quran and Sunnah) it will be rejected and not accepted by Allah based on text of this hadith. This hadith complements Hadith #1, which makes the two criteria for the acceptance of any good deed. (1) The intention must be for Allah and (2) the deed must be according the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). Emulating and following the Prophet (ﷺ) is obligatory as Allah says, Verily, in the apostle of God you have the best example to emulate for everyone who looks forward (with hope and awe) to Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah unceasingly. [Quran 33:21] Say (O Prophet): If you love Allah, follow me, (and) Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. [Quran 3:31] The hadith and discussion of this more numerous than would ever fit in a Facebook post. I once tried posting an introduction to a book I wrote on here and it was too long for a post and I had to post it as a note which I recommend reading @ https://facebook/notes/ali-camarata/importance-of-the-sunnah-and-danger-of-its-opposite-bidah/699338060110565 Note that in the Khutbatul-Hajjah which the Prophet (ﷺ) said before every khutbah, many speeches and had the Companions memorize for starting announcements and speeches with he would say Verily, the most truthful speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the worst affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire. Combined with the hadith we will cover tomorrow my best advice to one who fears standing before Allah is that what is obligatory is clear and many bidah that have become common is what people do for extra deeds, but the bidah is more dangerous to us than a sin, it ruins us, harms us and angers Allah. For the one who fears Allah solidify and strengthen the things that are clear and obligatory like the 5 salat, fasting Ramadan, paying Zakah, wearing hijab, growing a beard, perfecting character, etc. After this if someone says You should do X after every salah you can ask them for evidence. Merely saying my Imam told me to do... or Scholar X told me to do... and even what I say to you is nothing if it ever contradicts Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). Like Imam Shafii said if you find his saying to ever contradict the Prophets (ﷺ) then through it against the wall (ie. disregard and throw it out). Three things that are agreed by every scholar as evidence are: 1- Quran 2- Authentic Hadith 3- Ijma (consensus) of the Companions or Scholars So start your religion with what is sure, and only add what is authentic to it to avoid polluting it with something that was never done by the Prophet (ﷺ) or his companions. May Allah protect us from destroying ourselves with bidah and give us knowledge for knowledge of the Sunnah is a shield from its opposite (bidah) to protect us and honor us - and make us amongst those in the highest levels of Jannah, ameen.
